Kelly Clarkson Takes Ellen’s 3:00 PM Slot
Kelly Clarkson is an American singer, songwriter, actress, author, and television personality. She rose to fame for winning the first season of American Idol in 2002, which earned her a record deal with RCA. Her debut single, “A Moment Like This” topped the US Billboard Hot 100 and became the country’s best selling single of 2002.
Trying to reinvent her image, Clarkson parted ways with Idol management and shifted to pop rock for her second studio album, Breakaway (2004) which sold over 12 million copies worldwide and won two Grammy Awards. Having sold over 25 million albums and 45 million singles worldwide she has 11 top-ten singles in the US, and nine top-ten singles in the UK, Canada, and Australia and became the first artist in history to top each of Billboards pop, adult contemporary, adult pop, country, and dance charts. Having won numerous awards at such a young age she is hailed as “one of pop music’s greatest singers.”
In recent years, Clarkson moved from creating music to celebrity hosting, having served as a coach on The Voice since and her own talk show, The Kelly Clarkson Show. Since 2019 the show has been wildly successful and is rapidly growing. The Kelly Clarkson show has been tapped to take over the daytime slot, currently occupied by Ellen, when her show comes to an end next year. NBC owns and produces Clarkson’s show so it appears to be a natural fit that it would take over the time slot on NBC owned stations.
Similar to Ellen, which NBC has carried in major markets across the nation, Clarkson’s show is currently aired in 200 stations across the country and will be billed as daytime’s headliner in leading slots next year after the Ellen Show wraps her long time run.
It’s worth noting that the move to replace Ellen with The Kelly Clarkson Show came with a financial incentive as the Ellen show was owned and produces as a Warner’s production. Valari Staab, President NBC Universal Local “These are remarkable achievements for a talk show in its second season. We look forward to Ellen DeGeneres’ 19th season paired with Kelly Clarkson for what is sure to be a blockbuster year.
